Mental health is an important part of any person’s overall wellbeing. Children and adolescents are especially susceptible to issues with their mental health due to the rapid changes they experience in this period of life. It is therefore important to understand the importance of mental health in young people and how we as adults can support them in maintaining a healthy mental state.

As parents, teachers, and other caregivers, we can play an essential role in helping children and adolescents develop healthy habits that prevent the onset of mental illness or help them cope with existing issues. In this article, we will look at the importance of mental health in young people together with practical tips on how adults can promote good mental wellness.

Mental Health and Young People

Research has found that between 10-20% of children and adolescents experience some form of mental illness.(1) Often, these issues go undiagnosed or do not receive adequate treatment which can lead to long-term problems such as depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse or self-harming behaviors.(2) It is therefore important for us as adults to be aware of the signs that could indicate a problem so that we can act early and provide support.

Young people often struggle with feelings like loneliness or sadness which are normal emotions during this stage in life; however, if these negative feelings become overwhelming it could indicate a more serious problem which should not be ignored.(3) Other warning signs include difficulty sleeping or concentrating, changes in behavior such as becoming irritable or aggressive towards others, withdrawing from activities they previously enjoyed or expressing thoughts about death or suicide.(4) If any of these indicators are present it is important to reach out for help from medical professionals who specialize in treating young people’s emotional issues.

Supporting Young People’s Mental Wellness

It is also important for us as adults to create an environment where children feel safe and supported so that they can express themselves freely without fear of judgment or criticism.(5) We need to make sure that young people know it’s okay to talk about how they feel without worrying about being judged by their peers.(6) This includes being open about our own struggles if appropriate so that our kids understand it’s normal to feel overwhelmed sometimes.

In addition, setting boundaries around technology use such as limiting screen time can have a positive effect on young people’s emotional wellbeing by helping them stay connected with friends while also balancing work/study commitments.(7) It’s also beneficial for young people to engage in activities outside of school such as sports teams or clubs which provide opportunities for socializing with peers while also developing physical fitness.(8)

Finally, teaching our kids healthy coping strategies when faced with difficult emotions is another way we can support their emotional development; this includes encouraging mindfulness practices such as deep breathing exercises which have been found to reduce stress levels (9). Additionally modeling behaviors like taking regular breaks from work/study commitments and engaging in self-care activities like going for walks outdoors are all ways we can show our kids how best to take care of themselves emotionally.

Mental health should always be taken seriously regardless of age but it is especially important during childhood and adolescence when humans experience rapid physical growth coupled with emotional development. As adults supporting young people’s mental wellness involves listening without judgment when they express their feelings; creating safe spaces where they feel accepted; setting boundaries around technology use; providing opportunities for socializing outside school hours; teaching healthy coping strategies; modeling self-care practices; and seeking professional help if needed. All these elements combined will help create a supportive environment where children and adolescents can thrive mentally while growing into healthy adults.
